蘇新田先生1940年生於雲林縣北港鎮的村莊,1962年進入師大美術系就讀,1966年聯合師大美術系好友組成「畫外畫會」,企圖從當時藝壇盛行的抽象繪畫中,尋找另種前衛的創作方式。

1971年蘇新田赴美舉行首次個展,並經歷許多磨難與啟發,歸國後開始致力於「循環空間」專題性的繪畫研究。從70年代開始,投入大量時間為其藝術尋找跨領域的理論基礎,他以哲學、數學、物理學等相關知識為前提,不斷思索宇宙時空虛實相依、內外互圍的關係,進而從已知的科學知識中用畫筆探討宇宙時空精彩變幻的循環空間問題。

1998年蘇新田自行出版《循環空間—蘇新田的多向度繪畫世界》一書,展現他以繪畫實踐循環空間理論所做的努力,交錯運用扭曲與錯覺的方法,加上自由遊移的透視繪法,表現多重重力的循環空間。蘇先生獨特的「循環空間」繪畫,在巨幅畫布裡仔細描繪人與自然間的宏觀宇宙,在有限的畫面中展現宇宙無邊的時空概念。

一座座令人驚異的迷宮花園,不斷引發觀眾深探究竟的好奇心,就在試圖解讀畫面內容的同時,卻又讓人迷失在視點多重、線條彎曲,看似斷裂實則連續的循環空間中。這種視覺上不確定的曖昧感,來自構圖上挑戰尋常視覺習慣的新嘗試,而此種似非而是的扭曲空間,正是蘇新田窮盡四十年的心力所精心創造的奇幻世界。

他研讀現代物理科學、心理學、數學、哲學,並參酌道家、佛家思維,逐步釐清對西方宇宙論的困惑,最後將他對循環空間的認識,轉化成自信的繪畫語彙清楚呈現。本展堪稱藝術家蘇新田歷年來最盛大也最完整的創作回顧展,展出1972年至2006年間,以「循環空間」理論為出發點所創作的53件巨幅油畫作品,包括參與本館開館展的10公尺長大作《太平洋的晨曦照射到被四度空間所震盪的非物體》,以及本館典藏品《野營、羊群、斜陽、海風》。

展覽並分作「錯覺循環」、「非物體」、「深度錯覺」、「多重世界」、「空間迴旋」與「循環水平線」六個層次,搭配他親自整理撰寫的圖例、表格與資料,藉以呈現長期以來對循環空間理論的關注與體悟。透過蘇新田先生充滿想像力與創新思維的作品展示,觀眾將從中看見其筆下多向度的繪畫世界,甚至翻轉以往對於宇宙空間的固有認識,進而望見不一樣的宇宙世界。

Preface

Mr. Su Hsin-tien was born in 1940 in Beigang Township, Yunlin County. In 1962 he entered the art department of National Taiwan Normal University. In 1966 Su joined with his NTNU classmates to form the Hua Wai Painting Association, which aimed to discover a new, avant-garde art form within the abstract painting style that was popular at the time. In 1971 Su Hsin-tien traveled to the U.S. to hold his first solo exhibition.

After a series of tribulations and enlightenments, he returned to Taiwan and began to focus his painting research on the topic of cyclical space. Beginning in the 1970s Su devoted large amounts of time to this type of art in his search for an inter-disciplinary theoretical foundation. Using philosophy, math, and physics, he pondered the mutual reliance of time and space, solid and emptiness in the universe, as well as the reciprocal relationship between the internal and external.

Then, using his scientific knowledge as a base, he used his brush to explore the question of cyclical space in the splendid fluctuations of space and time in the universe. In 1998 Su Hsin-tien self-published the book CYCLICAL SPACE : Su Hsin-Tien's Multi-Dimensional World in Painting, which showed his efforts in using his painting to realize the theory of cyclical space. He used a series of distortions and illusions, as well as free and roaming perspective, to portray cyclical space and its multiple layers of gravity.

In Mr. Su distinctive cyclical space paintings, Su carefully depicted the universe that separates man and nature, expressing the boundless universe and the concept of time and space within the confined space of a canvas. His series of labyrinth-like gardens shocks viewers and stimulates their curiosity. While trying to decipher the paintings, viewers can get lost in the multitude of perspectives represented. Lines are bent and crooked and appear to be broken, but in fact are linked in a continuous cycle.

This visual uncertainty and ambiguity comes from the way that the experimental composition of the works challenges ordinary visual conventions. The distorted, fantastical space that is created is the result of more than 40 years of exhaustive effort by Su Hsin-tien. Su studied modern physics and science, psychology, math, philosophy, and even Taoist and Buddhist thinking, gradually coming to an understanding of Western cosmology and finally taking his knowledge of cyclical space and expressing it in his distinctly confident painting language.

This exhibition is the largest and most complete retrospective of Su Hsin-tien's works. The exhibition presents Su's works from 1972 to 2006, taking the theory of cyclical space as a starting point. The 53 large oil paintings that are represented include a 10-meter long work, Early Pacific Dawn Shines upon the Throes of Four Dimensional Space, which was presented at the TFAM's inaugural exhibition more than 20 years ago, as well as Camping, Goats, Sunset, and Seat Breeze, a piece from the Museum's permanent collection.

The exhibition uses "Illusive Cycle," "Non-Objects," "Deep Illusion," "Multi-dimen-sional World," "Rotating Spaces," and "Cyclical Horizons," a total of six levels, which are accompanied by explanations, tables, and other materials written by Su himself and help to illustrate his long-term interest in and understanding of the cyclical space theory.

Through the display of Mr. Su Hsin-tien's imaginative and creative works, audience members can see the many aspects of Su's painting world, and may even have their preconceptions about the universe overturned.
